Target an SE trim for the best balance of comfort, durability (V-Tex leatherette), and value. The SEL is a great option for a luxury build, but its cost might outweigh the benefits for a dedicated work truck.

What we would recommend: For your Smyth Ute, the 2011-2014 Jetta SE with the 2.5L 5-cylinder engine is the sweet spot because its bulletproof reliability and comfortable V-Tex leatherette interior give you the best, lowest-maintenance custom pickup experience.
Bottom Line
These 2.5s are as good as it gets. The timing chains go for 200k miles regularly (as opposed to the belts on other engines). Overall, we have yet to work with an engine as reliable as this one. TDIs are great too for obvious reasons, but we would recommend going with a 2.5 manual for a combo of fuel efficiency, longevity and ease of mechanical work.
